The area covers around 100km2 of diverse high altitude Afro-alpine habitat supporting rare and endemic plants species including Guassa grass, giant lobelia, other moorland vegetation, and a breathtaking scenery, friendly and welcoming people. The grass plays a pivotal role in providing communities with housing materials, fuel for cooking, feed for livestock and household items and is regarded by the community as their cloth, Bread, and Butter.
